Flowering a jade tree is no small feat. Above all, it takes time. In fact, many crassulas are long-lived  and only bloom when they mature.  Crassulas bloom in late winter or early spring. Crassula blooms with small, star-shaped white, pink, or red flowers. That said, to encourage flowering and obtain beautiful blooms, you’ll need to  provide your plant with a dry, bright, and sunny environment.

–  Respect the dormant period:  In winter, your indoor jade tree should enter a dormant period, just as it would outdoors. This dormant period is important  for your Crassula ovata to produce buds.  During this period, reduce watering and stop any fertilizer applications. Also, keep your plant in a cool room, making sure to provide  light exposure for at least 4 hours a day.  Cool nights, bright days, and a lack of water encourage your plant to form buds,  which will then produce flowers.

–  Avoid humid climates:  If your indoor climate is too humid, your jade tree won’t produce buds. It should be  placed in a dry, bright location.  This is why it’s often difficult to get it to flower indoors. This is especially true because it requires both partial shade and direct sunlight. Also, since the jade tree is native to South Africa,  it requires warmth.  Keep your plant at a temperature of around 12°C to encourage bud formation,  especially during its flowering period.

– Wait until the plant is mature: Keep in mind that even if you provide your plant with all the conditions it needs to flower,  it will only bloom if it’s mature enough.  Also, some crassulas don’t flower until they’re 9 or 10 years old.

After flowering, it’s advisable to prune your jade tree. Take the opportunity to remove old or weakened branches. Furthermore, the Crassula ovata is a succulent that requires a limited supply of water, as succulents have fleshy leaves that can store water. Therefore, they can survive in arid climates and dry soils without wilting. This characteristic of the crassula allows for limited watering, especially in winter. In fact, during this cold season, monthly watering is sufficient.

During flowering, water your plant once or twice a week,  as long as the soil is dry.  Too much water could cause its roots to rot. Outside of flowering periods, you can space out your waterings. You can settle for one or two waterings, every 15 days,  with non-calcareous water,  such as rainwater, remembering to let the soil dry between waterings. It’s also important to eliminate stagnant water in the saucer or pot to prevent your crassula’s root system from rotting. Repot your plant as soon as it starts to feel cramped. Use potting soil mixed with sand for repotting.  The latter is effective at promoting soil drainage. Note that you can also use a special substrate for succulents or make your own. To do this, mix perlite, sand, and compost.

To fertilize your plant, remember to add cactus fertilizer only once a month, in fall and spring. Furthermore, the crassula ovata can grow without fertilizer because it’s accustomed to poor soil. Also remember to protect your plant from frost and mealybugs. These are also the only pests crassula ovata fears. Note that you can propagate your plant by leaf or stem cuttings.

By knowing the growing conditions for Crassula ovata, you’ll not only make it bloom, but you’ll also keep it in good condition, thus attracting money and luck to your home, according to Chinese Feng Shui.
